LABIAPLASTY

Labiaplasty, also known as Labioplasty, is a procedure to sculpt the size or shape of the labia minora (the inner folds of skin or ‘lips’ at the entrance to the vagina). This procedure, although not often discussed, is becoming increasingly popular as women realise that something can be done to improve the physical and emotional discomfort associated with excessively long labia.

The anatomy of a woman’s vulva is unique and often inherited. However, the shape can change due to childbirth, weight loss, stages of life or simply the ageing process. Having elongated labia minora can cause discomfort when wearing form fitted clothing and even lead to irritation or rash. Women may also stop wearing this clothing because of the more noticeable appearance of the vulva. In many cases, women experience distress or unpleasant sensations during sexual intercourse or elect to avoid sexual interactions altogether due to feelings of embarrassment with regards to their vagina.

Cosmetic surgery of the genitals is something that most women feel uncomfortable talking about, especially those who are already self-conscious of the appearance of their vagina. If you are considering this, just know that you are not alone! We, at Zen Medispa, feel that you should be proud and empowered to make this decision to take control of your happiness.

FAQs

Labiaplasty is a safe surgical procedure that reduces the size of the inner vaginal lips. Every labiaplasty surgery is fully customised to each individual’s anatomy and specific concerns. This often involves one or more of the following:

  • Excess tissue being removed from enlarged labia minora
  • Reduction of the labia majora or mons pubis through liposuction
  • Rejuvenation of the labia majora or mons pubis with fat grafting
Labiaplasty is a day procedure and is performed at an accredited hospital either under sedation or general anaesthetic. Local anaesthetic is also used to minimise discomfort during and after the procedure. The surgery usually takes 1 – 1.5 hours to perform. Dissolving stitches are used that do not need to be removed, and simple and light dressings provided for your return home. You will be provided with a prescription for pain medications to take at home, after discussion and a plan tailored to you with your anaesthetist.

After the procedure, you can expect to have some discomfort. With proper care, a full recovery from labiaplasty is generally achieved within a matter of weeks following the surgery. Pain is minimal and can be controlled with mild painkillers. Swelling and bruising can be expected but both symptoms will subside after peaking two to three days after the operation and is mostly resolved around a week.

Commonly a degree of swelling and bruising is expected which can be improved by reducing sheer, wearing tighter underpants and cool packs. Small amounts of bleeding initially are also normal and wearing a pad will aide your comfort.

Your wounds will need to remain moist to aid healing with an antibiotic ointment applied twice a day. Toileting as normal with gentle care with the ointment providing a barrier. You may shower the day after the procedure for your comfort.

Your doctor will see you before you go home and at regular intervals after the procedure to ensure comfort and answer any questions you may have about your surgery. Once home, resting for a few days will improve your recovery and avoid strenuous activities and sexual intercourse is essential to a good result.

As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications. These include:

  • Infection
  • Bruising, bleeding, haematoma formation
  • Scarring
  • Wound healing issues
  • Anaesthetic problems
  • Allergy
  • Deep Vein thrombosis
  • Pain
  • Delayed wound healing

These complications are rare, and all steps are taken to prevent complications from occurring.

Specific to labiaplasty, the outcomes and complications may include:

  • Asymmetry – almost no one is perfectly symmetrical
  • Under-correction – Not enough tissue removed
  • Over-correction – Too much tissue removed
  • Poor or painful scarring
  • Haematoma or blood clot formation – may require return to surgery
  • Infection – treated with antibiotics
  • Sensation changes

Every woman’s body and her needs are different and the best method for determining whether or not you are a suitable candidate for labiaplasty and/or vulval rejuvenation is to meet with our doctor at Zen in Burwood. We will tailor the procedure specific for you.

Due to the personal nature of these procedures, female members of our staff are also available for women who would feel more comfortable initially talking to someone of the same sex.
