What is skin pigmentation?
Pigmentation is basically the colouring in one’s skin. Our skin is very complex and contains cells called melanocytes. These melanocytes produce a chemical compound called Melanin. Melanin is responsible for giving human skin its distinctive colour.

When our bodies are working as planned, these melanocytes produce melanin at a steady, consistent rate. This results in our skin tone being even. But problems can occur when these cells produce either too much or too little melanin. This results in a range of harmless skin pigmentation conditions such as:

Hyperpigmentation is a very common condition that we see regularly at Zen Medispa. It results in the skin darkening, usually in patches. There are different types of hyperpigmentation, one of the most common is known as melasma. While melasma is often caused by hormonal changes during pregnancy, pigmentation issues can also be caused by multiple other factors, including stress, exposure to the sun, and genetics.

Can my diet help reduce skin pigmentation?
Yes, your diet plays an important role in your overall wellness, so it’s no surprise that food choices can directly affect the appearance of the skin. Some of the different foods that can help to reduce skin discolouration include those rich in Vitamin A. Green vegetables like spinach, broccoli and kale are all high in Vitamin A. Vitamin E is also beneficial for the overall health of the skin, and can be found in foods like avocados, nuts and tomatoes.

One reason your skin may have pigmentation is a B12 deficiency. To boost your intake of this nourishing vitamin, consider incorporating eggs, dairy products, and meat into your diet. If you prefer a vegetarian eating plan, look for soy-based products that are fortified with vitamin B12, like meat substitutes and soy drinks.

For general skin vibrancy and health, be sure to eat plenty of Vitamin C by having your daily dose of fruits and vegetables. A balanced, nutritious diet goes a long way in brightening the tone of the skin.
