Do you have darks spots on your face that just appeared there over time?
Pigmentation can increase how old we look, even more so than wrinkles. If there’s pigmentation on your skin that’s bothering you, it’s easy to do something about it. With a combination of a healthy diet and a perfectly tailored treatment plan, it is possible to refresh your skin texture and reduce discolouration.
What is skin pigmentation?
Pigmentation is basically the colouring in one’s skin. Our skin is very complex and contains cells called melanocytes. These melanocytes produce a chemical compound called Melanin. Melanin is responsible for giving human skin its distinctive colour.
When our bodies are working as planned, these melanocytes produce melanin at a steady, consistent rate. This results in our skin tone being even. But problems can occur when these cells produce either too much or too little melanin. This results in a range of harmless skin pigmentation conditions such as:
Hyperpigmentation is a very common condition that we see regularly at Zen Medispa. It results in the skin darkening, usually in patches. There are different types of hyperpigmentation, one of the most common is known as melasma. While melasma is often caused by hormonal changes during pregnancy, pigmentation issues can also be caused by multiple other factors, including stress, exposure to the sun, and genetics.
Can my diet help reduce skin pigmentation?
Yes, your diet plays an important role in your overall wellness, so it’s no surprise that food choices can directly affect the appearance of the skin. Some of the different foods that can help to reduce skin discolouration include those rich in Vitamin A. Green vegetables like spinach, broccoli and kale are all high in Vitamin A. Vitamin E is also beneficial for the overall health of the skin, and can be found in foods like avocados, nuts and tomatoes.
One reason your skin may have pigmentation is a B12 deficiency. To boost your intake of this nourishing vitamin, consider incorporating eggs, dairy products, and meat into your diet. If you prefer a vegetarian eating plan, look for soy-based products that are fortified with vitamin B12, like meat substitutes and soy drinks.
For general skin vibrancy and health, be sure to eat plenty of Vitamin C by having your daily dose of fruits and vegetables. A balanced, nutritious diet goes a long way in brightening the tone of the skin.
What treatment options are available?
While your diet plays an important role in keeping your skin healthy and beautiful, there are a range of treatments especially designed to improve the signs of pigmentation. At Zen Medispa we know your skin is different from everyone else’s. That’s why we tailor all our treatments to each patient to get the best results possible.
Once we have done a thorough skin analysis, we will help you to find the correct treatment for your needs. Depending on the type of pigmentation that you have, we may recommend a combination of treatments, including:
- Laser Skin Rejuvenation – We use the ICON laser system, which works by delivering precise energy pulses through the top two layers of the skin, making tiny holes. This energy is used to stimulate the body to produce more collagen so healthy new skin can grow and replace the old, pigmented skin.
- Picosure Cosmetic Skin Laser Treatments – The laser uses highly-targeted energy in ultra-short bursts, which has the effect of specifically breaking down the pigmentation in the skin. These particles are gradually removed by your own immune system.
- IPL Skin Rejuvenation– This non-invasive treatment delivers an intense broad wavelength light to the skin which gets absorbed by unwanted skin pigmentation, causing the pigment to actually shatter. It also seals the surrounding small blood vessels, making this an amazing treatment for spider veins. The heat energy of IPL also stimulates new collagen production, firms the skin, and reduces skin pore size, resulting in a healthier and fresher you.
