What is Vaser Liposuction?

Vaser liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that is used to alter the shape of the body via the removal of persistent fat deposits. It is a specialised ultrasound technology that breaks down fat cells by sending out ultrasonic frequency waves which once broken down, can be removed by a cosmetic surgeon through a suction process or the liposuction part of the procedure. This procedure has a number of benefits compared to traditional liposuction.

About Vaser liposuction

Vaser stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance. The key thing to note about Vaser liposuction is that it is purely cosmetic and does nothing to remove the visceral fat wrapped around your organs which increases your risk for diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Am I a suitable candidate for Vaser liposuction?

Both men and women can have Vaser liposuction but it is important that you are already at your goal weight and live a healthy lifestyle. This is imperative because if you will not get the results you desire if you choose this as a way to try to lose weight. The ability to keep the weight off depends on the maintenance of that healthy lifestyle after the procedure. An amount of skin durability and elasticity will also make the procedure a little more effective.

Vaser liposuction is ideal for those who wish to:

  • Tighten loose skin after natural weight loss
  • Lose a few centimetres around your thighs, waist or hips
  • Add some definition without weight loss

Who is not suitable for Vasper liposuction?

The same way that there are ideal candidates for the procedure, there are certain people who should not undergo Vaser liposuction. People who do not maintain a healthy lifestyle are at a greater risk for complications compared to those who ado. Certain medications do also increase the risk for bleeding, particularly anticoagulants which makes undergoing Vasper liposuction unsafe for them. Any medications that would impede the metabolism of lidocaine, the local anaesthetic used in the procedure, also increases the risk. If the individual is able to stop these medications at least two weeks before the surgery may become suitable. Vaser liposuction is not a solution for obesity as it cannot remove large amounts of weight permanently. People without good skin elasticity are also not suitable unless they are happy with the potential fact that once the weight is gone, there might be a slightly wrinkled appearance to the skin. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are also not suitable for this procedure.

Which areas does Vaser liposuction treat?

Vaser liposuction can treat a number of areas including:

  • Chin
  • Neck
  • Upper arms
  • Breasts
  • Male chest
  • Abdomen
  • Flanks
  • Outer and inner thighs
  • Knees
  • Upper and lower back
  • Buttocks

What happens during the Vaser liposuction procedure?

Vaser liposuction will either be performed under local, general anaesthetic or conscious sedation which is usually safer. The procedure uses ultrasound energy to break up and emulsify fat whilst leaving the surrounding tissue relatively intact. A small incision is made and the targeted area is then filled with a special saline solution which makes it easier to emulsify the fatty tissue. A suction process is then used to remove the fat.

What to expect after Vaser liposuction

Most candidates experience skin tightening shortly after the procedure. Some results will begin to show as soon as six weeks but it is important to remember that the best results will become visible several months after the procedure. This is because the body requires a significant healing period, though results may differ in patients. You can also expect a reasonable amount of pain and discomfort after receiving Vaser liposuction. Most people typically need between 4 – 7 days off of work to recover, depending on their job. You will also need to wear a compression garment for 6 weeks with a follow-up of a lymphatic drainage massage within the first two weeks.

How is Vaser liposuction different from traditional liposuction?

The biggest difference and benefit of Vaser liposuction compared to traditional methods is the minimal amount of damage that occurs to the surrounding tissues. Vaser liposuction requires only a small incision and uses soundwaves to liquefy the fat before it is removed from your body. This liquification allows for greater precision and makes the removal far easier while minimising any damage. During Vaser liposuction, the surgeon can also specifically target areas with fat while also highlighting and defining certain muscles, giving more visible results. Vaser liposuction can also tighten the skin and target cellulite due to the combination of ultrasound and laser techniques that are used.
