What is acne?

Acne is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease involving oil glands that are at the base of hair follicles. This skin condition causes spots and pimples on the face, shoulders, back, neck, chest and upper arms, and mostly affect people between the ages of 11 to 30 years.

Acne usually starts developing during puberty. It is not a dangerous condition but can leave scars on the skin.

The different types of acne include:

Whiteheads

These are found under the skin and are small in size.

Blackheads

These appear on the surface of the skin.

Papules

These are tiny pink bumps on the surface of the skin.

Nobules

These are large, solid and painful pimples that are found deep within the skin.

Cysts

These are painful pimples which are filled with pus and could cause acne scarring.

Some causes of acne on the skin include:

  • Genetics
  • The menstrual cycle
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Hot and humid climates
  • Using oil-based makeup
  • Hormonal changes

What are acne scars and what causes them?

Acne scars are a result of poking or picking at pimples or spots, which causes trauma to the skin and can lead to scars being formed on your skin.  Acne scars form pits or raised skin on the surface of the face or body and do not always improve in time. If the acne is not treated in time you are most likely to get acne scarring.
